What is a comparative measurement?

In order to determine whether measurement at the wrist gives reliable readings, a comparison with an upper arm device should be made before purchasing a blood pressure watch. To do this, rest for 5 minutes before the first measurement. Then, with a rest for one minute between measurements, take a reading at the wrist, then in the upper arm, again at the wrist and again in the upper arm. Note the readings obtained and compare the noted diastolic readings of the two wrist-upper arm pairs of measurements. If the difference in the diastolic readings in both cases is less than 10 mm Hg, a wrist device is suitable. However, if the two readings differ by more than 10 mm Hg, you should use an upper arm measurement device. If the result is not clear-cut, repeat the comparative measurement under resting conditions.
